It’s that time of year again! Time to decorate the house, cuisine, pets and most importantly your SELF! Here are some GLAM choices at NET a PORTER to mull over …a bit on the pricy side but it’s good to keep your eyes on the prize and between now and New Year’s there will be plenty of sales and opportunities to grab your personal favorites…! xoxo
This is our first Christmas in Santa Monica, CA and if that, plus the amazing weather wasn’t enough cause for our current joy we ALSO now live in a townhouse with a real front door that goes directly out into the world! This is pretty amazing to someone who spent the last 15 years in NYC. So around Halloween this year I started researching actual, full-sized, door-wreath type decorations just to see what I might want to do with this delightful new resource for the holidays.
Of course I always start checking online at the usual suspects (Ebay, Martha, Crate & Barrel) and there are a lot of possibilities out there but I then stumbled upon a shop at Etsy.com that brought wreath design to a whole new, artistic level that just couldn’t be ignored! Melissa Clark from Utah is the master mind behind these incredible, unique and sure-to-catch attention designs at The Chicadee Shop. The three I have posted below show a range of whimsey & vintage flare, edited to perfection with matching, gorgeous ribbons to compliment each design. The prices are a bit above what you might pay at Crate & Barrel and Pottery Barn for their mass produced door decorations but by buying one of these exceptional wreaths you are getting a small treasure, made to your order, that will last a lifetime & more and never fail to delight the eye and mind ; ) Note the wonderful use of a vintage Frosty the Snowman card on the first wreath plus vintage poinsettia labels…and the FAB vintage, brush bottle Christmas trees in the third wreath down – I’ve been wanting to craft with these ever since I saw this creation.
I also DID nab a SUPER AMAZING Halloween wreath from this shop that I actually still have up and hanging in our house – it has a vintage, Beistle, pumpkin party favor attached to the front and thick, black & white, corduroy fabric woven around it – this honestly looks even more perfect and finely detailed in person and that’s unusual for me to say (super picky gal) about any design – even my own! I really don’t EVER want to take it down! (see below…) I just wish it came with this awesome green door that Melissa must have photographed it hanging on. I suppose now that I have a front door of my own I’ll start getting picky about it and eventually want to buy a vintage one just make it look more cool! Thank goodness the shopping madness never ends! HO HO HO!!! xoxo
Here are my top picks for holiday music listening whilst doing all the holiday chores, decorating, crafting, gift wrapping, cooking and cleaning that needs to be done… and these also work well as accompaniment to the holiday eating & drinking that is sure to follow…
As everyone must know by now; A Very She & Him Christmas is at the very tip-top of the heap of holiday albums this year and possibly many years past. This collection of classic tunes are sung in warm-hearted new renditions by Zooey Deschanel that rival many of the tried and true classic forms. The only slight disappointment is that “Baby It’s Cold Outside” doesn’t work as charmingly as it did when Deschanel sang it in that memorable shower scene in the movie ELF. But that doesn’t effect the overall delight of this charming album that I can’t seem to stop playing on my ipod.
The UK-based trio; The Puppini Sisters, released a Christmas album last year that needs a mention here in case anyone missed out on it. Christmas With The Puppini Sisters is a delight and a MUST if you love festive, retro music. Their glowing, three-part harmonies can not fail to wow you. And they do such fun, vintage cover songs that they will keep your holiday party hopping and a’bopping along on a cold, winter’s night!
It seems odd to place Kate Bush’s new album; 50 Words For Snow into any sort of list of similar, seasonal music since there is nothing in her music that sounds like anything that anyone has ever heard before. For years I have kept her 1979 song December Will Be Magic on my holiday music rotations (Here’s a Facebook page devoted to only that song alone) I’ve spent whole evenings scouring the internet for rare video clips of the 70s-80s Christmas specials she sang and danced in. Her great love for this time of year is no surprise. This album is her current take on this favorite season where she has limited herself to including only songs that reference snow, ice and wintertime. Just don’t be fooled into thinking this is anywhere near a ordinary holiday/seasonal album. Each new composition is as singular and original an experience as falling, being blown, wind swept up and crystalized into a little snowflake of music where no two can ever be alike.
“Christmas morning she’ll be happier with a hoover”? …Guess again 1950’s advertisement…!!! So what does the modern woman want, aside from not having her intelligence insulted by being presented with cleaning tools that have been camouflaged as ‘happy’ gifts?
Well I can always think of clothing, accessories and shoes I’d love to have but in these tough times practical items might be more desirable than expensive non-essentials. But there’s no need for practical to equal not pretty right? So I’m going back to essentials this year and putting traditional sleepwear on my santa list. I mean, who couldn’t use some new pajamas?
Here’s an amazing pair I LOVE by Bedhead:
It’s their “Polly Sateen Classic PJ” And YES, this style was worn by Zooey Deschanel in her new tv series on FOX; “New Girl”, several episodes ago – I saw the episode the night it aired (I’m a BIG fan) and noticed this cute parrot pattern right away, and now I can’t get them out of my mind. But these fancy Polly-parrot (NOT polyester!) pjs come with a super fancy price ($136 at bedheadpjs.com) so you might want to shop around before committing to these…
To the right there’s a more reasonably priced but equally cute pair from Victoria’s Secret; The Afterhours Satin Pajama, in pink stripes for $59. These remind me of the Ralph Lauren satin, striped, purple PJs I got a few years back – but this is a much better price than RL! And check out the classic black piping on all of the edges too…nice touch!
Lastly, check out this truly practical flannel pair to the left; The Dreamer Flannel Pajama, also VS, on sale for only $29.99! These are great if you need to be really warm plus if you enlarge the picture you will see that these have pretty, scalloped edges and also matching slippers to boot! There are loads of pajama choices out there but I’m really feeling these soft, girly, pink patterns right now. Plus vertical stripes work for everyone so you know you’ll look as good as you feel when you wear these!
Let me know what pretty and practical items everyone is looking for this year. There’s nothing like the satisfaction of finding a great price on something you REALLY need that is beautifully designed ~ it’s a Holiday shopper’s true bliss…!
So I wanted to do a “Twelve Days Of Christmas Shopping” feature this year for my first bloggy Christmas but now that we are down to crunch time (and I still don’t have all my cards sent out!) I’d better just start flinging out ideas like a holiday pinata.
This internet ad image above was emailed to me a couple of years ago from a major shopping site (I think it was Shopbop?) The minute I saw it I grabbed it and pasted it to my desktop for festive inspiration and to glamourize the general madness & fun of the seasons shopping. I thought this might be a good place to start – with my own version of Christmas Shopping Survival Blogging!. So strap on your minty green, chiffon dresses and some long, winter white gloves and let’s go…!
What could possibly be more of a time consuming hassle than the massive holiday mailings that we foolishly undertake? Don’t get me wrong I LOVE the decadent ritual of mailing real, paper cards with cool vintage stamps and pretty holiday seals but here’s a simple purchase that can’t fail to make the tradition more easy & fun to handle:
I recently purchased a new address stamper (new home, new stamper!) from 2impress at etsy:
I went with the “HELLO!” version which I LOVE! So sweet but also modern and sharply designed that it really pops off the envelope especially when you use bright inks with it. I’m mostly doing royal blue and some green on my envelopes this year. The “CHEERS!” version is also fun if you want to add a British spin to your postings. They have a lovely group of traditional and whimsical stampers too so for $19.95 you really can’t go wrong. It’s a bit too late to get them for this season but order now and it will make all of your 2012 mailing extra decorative and fun.
So now I’ll get back to finishing the final few cards before I go on Santa’s “naughty list” ; P
Keep watching for more festive thoughts to come! xoxo
I’ve been MIA in the blog world lately due to massive holiday culture shock. At least that is the story I’m sticking too since it sounds convincing and is slightly supported by the fact that this will be our first Christmas/New Years on the west coast so clearly it must be the most time-consuming and difficult. But none of that has slowed down my shopping and I wanted to share my recent find on Ebay:
This cute, little snowman snow globe is a blast from my past. We had one exactly like this when I was younger but all the wear and tear of the years drained the water out of that globe and sadly back then (1980’s) when things were broken you just threw them away or at least my retro minded mom did. So Frosty went in the trash bin one year after Christmas when I wasn’t looking and I’ve missed him ever since. So glad to have this guy in my snowman collection now – lots of these come up for sale online but rarely this version which I think is the best. I’ll have to do a photo of him with his snow-globe girlfriend and the rather creepy snow-globe-belly Santa with a very nervous looking deer slung over his shoulder.
